One and Done

Being a mom is much harder than I thought. My mom, who had six children, makes it look so easy. Maybe when I am a little bit older, I will change my mind, but for now, I am so one and done! What do I mean by that? Well, as of right now, my baby girl Selena will be my only child.

When I was younger, I never really thought I wanted to be a mom. I always thought if I became a mom, it would “ruin my body”. I was under the impression that becoming a mom meant getting stretch marks, gaining weight, and getting cellulite. I was also scared to have a baby because I knew it would be very painful. Of course I realize now that these are very dumb reasons for not wanting to have a baby, but back then I thought it was important to look a certain way.

Finding out I was pregnant last year was very shocking and upsetting at first. As time went on, I would feel my baby kicking and all her little movements and started picturing my life with her. When I found out that I was having a girl, I was super excited. The closer I got to my due date, the more excited and happy I got. I came up with a list of nearly twenty names and Selena was the name that won, although if it had been completely up to me, her name would’ve been Anastasia.

As much as I love my baby, being a mom is hard. I really thought I would have more support. My mom and sister help out as much as possible, but they work and have their own things to do. I wish I could just stay home with my baby and be a stay at home mom or at least work from home, but this isn’t possible. I had to go back to work when my baby was 3 months old and I hated it. I was always worried about the baby when I was working and I dreaded going to work because I just wanted to be with my baby all the time.

People don’t really talk about the postpartum period and the “fourth trimester” as much as they talk about pregnancy. I knew I shouldn’t expect to sleep much with a baby and was told I would never “get my body back”. However, no one warned me that it is mentally challenging as well. Postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety are two challenges that many mothers go through after giving birth. I used to think why would anyway be depressed after having a baby? It’s such a joyous and happy occasion! I didn’t realize that some mothers get postpartum depression for many reasons. I also didn’t realize I had it until I was about 3 months postpartum. Some of the symptoms that I have experienced while dealing with postpartum depression are: insomnia, over worrying about everything, constantly feeling like I am not a good enough mother and that Selena deserves a better mom,not eating enough, lack of interest in doing something I love (working out), getting angry way too quickly, and having trouble concentrating on most things. At 9 months postpartum, I feel like I am finally starting to feel like my normal self again, though occasionally I do still have some really bad days. I feel like I lost myself as a mother, but through running and writing, I have found myself again, as cheesy and corny as that sounds.

Regardless of all this, I love by baby girl Selena. I just don’t think I can put myself through this again. The last 6 months have been so difficult for me. I am struggling financially, sometimes emotionally, and even physically.

Here’s a great article I found on postpartum depression if you want to learn more about it.

Disneyland

A little over two months ago, I took my 5 year old sister to Disneyland. It was her first time going to Disneyland and we went to celebrate her 5th birthday. I had promised her last year that we would go and she was so anxious for the day to come!

She was so excited to go. She kept telling all her teachers and friends at school that she was going. I took the day off from work and my mom took care of my baby so that  my sister and I could spend the day together at Disneyland.

We were able to get on a few rides. The first ride we got on was It’s a Small World. My sister didn’t like that ride because she thought it was boring. Her favorite ride ended up being Thunder Mountain . We got on that ride twice and she wanted to keep getting on it but the line was long. We also got on the Roger Rabbit ride and Haunted mansion.

I took my sisters to meet a few princesses. She was happy! She got to meet Snow White, Ariel, and Elena of Avalon. We didn’t have to wait too long for this. She took pictures with all of them and was very happy when we left.

There were a few food items that we splurged on. For sure my favorite was the hot cheetos and nacho cheese funnel cake! We also got dole whip, which was pineapple and raspberry swirled together, frozen strawberry horchata, and my sister got a chocolate covered pineapple.

Here are some of the pictures we took.

Disneyland can be pricey, starting with the tickets. But here are a few things we did save money at Disneyland:

  1. Eat breakfast at home. I didn’t see any point in eating at Disneyland when we had food at home.
  2. Take snacks. We took hummus and pita chips, strawberries, carrots, jello, and yogurt.
  3. Say no to souvenirs. I offered to buy my sister one but she didn’t want any. Which is good, because pictures are enough for us to remember the fun time we had at Disneyland.
  4. Eat dinner outside of the park. I took my sister to Mcdonalds and spent less than $10 on food for both of us.
  5. I didn’t do this, but my mom took sandwiches with her. You can’t take them inside Disneyland, but my mom just left them in a cooler in her car with ice and when it was time for lunch, they left Disneyland to eat.

Boysenberry Festival 2019

In April, Knott’s Berry Farm had their annual Boysenberry festival. I have the season pass for Knott’s and I love boysenberries, so of course I had to go. This was their 5th year and I have gone every year. Most years I only go once, but this year I decided to go twice. They had some new food items this year. Most of the food I tried was good. However, there were a couple disappointments.

Here is how I rate the food items at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival

Boysenberry Icee Float A++

This is my favorite drink. It’s basically an boysenberry flavored icee inside of a boyseberry flavored soft serve, so good. I first tried it last year and couldn’t wait to get it this year. got it during both visits to the festival.

Boysemberry Cheesecake on a Stick B

Had this last year, it’s pretty good. Very sweet though.

Boysenberry Waffles B-

This was good, but not something I would eat more than once

Boysenberry tortilla chips with boysenberry ice cream B

This was good, also very sweet

Boysenberry Grilled Cheese Sandwich B+

I love grilled cheese sandwiches and this one was really good!

Boysenberry chicken wings A-

One of my favorites from the Boysenberry Festival

IMG_20190401_120056_697.jpg
Pot roast w mashed potatoes C+

The pot roast was really good!! However, I did not like the mashed potatoes at all!!! Which is what brought the grade down. I did not enjoy eating mashed potatoes with little boysenberries inside of it.

Chicken Skewers A

This was for sure my favorite food to eat at the Boysenberry Festival! On my first visit I got this twice! They ran out when I was in line during my second visit.

(I forgot to get a picture of the hummus, oops!)

Boysenberry hummus B-

This was okay, nothing too special about it.

Baked boysenberry mac and cheese A-

I did not expect to like it, but I really enjoyed this one. I loved the baked mac and cheese and the habanero sauce wasn’t too spicy.

Boysenberry dole whip float B-

So disappointing. I wish that it had more ice cream than what it came with.

IMG_20190401_143156_868.jpg

Boysenberry steak w cream cheese topping A-

This was my second favorite food at the Boysenberry Festival. So good!

Boysenberry pulled pork tostada C+

Not a big fan of pork, which is why this has a low grade, but it did taste good.

Boysenberry elote

I love eating elote and this was good. My sister enjoyed it so much that she got 3 of them!

Overall, I enjoyed the food and can’t wait for the Boyseberry Festival in 2020!

My Baby Girl is 3 Months Old

Writing this a few days late, but my baby girl is now 3 months old! Time went by so fast. She is getting so big. I went back to work two weeks ago. Only worked one day, it went well. I admit that it was very hard for me to leave my baby girl for a few hours. Couldn’t stop thinking about her while I was at work. I am currently working part time, which means I work 2-3 days a week, anywhere from 3 to 5 hours at a time. This is fine for now because it gives me a chance to get used to being away from my baby. Down the line, I plan to work more hours. I just hope it gets easier leaving her with her baby sitters. If it was up to me, I would be a stay at home mom with an at home business. For now it’s not possible, but it is something I want to do sometime in the future.

As I mentioned earlier, baby girl has grown so much. She’s getting taller and heavier too. She smiles a lot, baby talks, and is very curious about everything. She is also starting to sit up and she also does tummy time.  She sleeps through the night and has been since she was 2 months old. She started off sleeping 5-6 hours at a time and now she sleeps anywhere from 8 to 11 hours a night. It’s great for me too because I can get at least 7 hours of sleep, which is all I need to function.

I’m with my baby almost 24/7. I do take the time to have time for myself though. One of the things I do is try to go for a run or go to the gym early in the morning. I try to go to the gym at least 3 times a week. I normally wake up at 5am those days and I’m at the gym by 530am. I leave the baby with my mom since she usually doesn’t wake up until 630am or 7am. I also like to go running. If I am running alone, I can run 3+ miles. Sometimes I need to go for a run but don’t have anyone to watch my baby, so I will run on the track at the park while I push her in her stroller. Those days I only run 2 miles.

One thing that many people ask me is if I breastfeed her or give her formula. She drinks formula. When I was pregnant, I wanted to breastfeed because everyone always says it’s way better and healthier for the baby. But no one ever talks about how hard it is. Yes it’s natural, but it’s not as easy as it seems. I tried for the first few days. The nurses at the hospital would give me advice. In the end, it didn’t seem like I could do it and I decided to feed her formula instead. She is a very healthy baby even if she is drinking formula.

I want to raise my baby as eco friendly as I can. One way I am doing that is by having my baby use cloth diapers rather than disposable diapers. I had two baby showers, one thrown for me by my mom and one thrown for me by my coworkers, and I received so many boxes of disposable diapers. I was also given some from the nurses when I had my baby. I have enough to last me until she’s 4 months old. Once they finish , she will be in cloth diapers 90% of the time. The only time she will be in disposable diapers is when her dad watches her. It might seem gross to people having to wash and reuse diapers, but it is way better for the environment. I am also looking into buying some reusable wipes rather than using reusable wipes.

She will be starting to eat solids pretty soon. I plan to give her veggies and fruit and tofu when she turns 6 months. I’ve heard that there are parents who give their babies soda and french fries when they are 9-12 months old, but I plan to feed my baby girl healthy food. I don’t want her to become obese when she’s older or when she gets teeth to have cavities.

Although I was caught by surprise last year when I found out that I was pregnant, having this baby girl is one of the best things that has happened to me. I’m so grateful that I have been blessed with such a beautiful and wonderful baby girl. I look forward to seeing her reach all her milestones and watching her grow up.

Back to Work

I’ve been on maternity leave for about three months and tomorrow I am finally going back. This was the longest time I ever went without working since I started working back in late 2012. I don’t mind going back, esp since I work part time. I just wish my mom or sister could babysit for me while I work. My boyfriend and his mom will watch her while I work. Luckily, they only live five minutes away from my job. I’ve been so anxious about going back to work that I haven’t been able to sleep much these past few days.
