No Spend Challenge 2019

In the past I have done many challenges. Some of them include the Meatless March challenge, no meat for the whole month of March, no TV for a month challenge, and I even went vegan for a week. The last one was really hard because I had to read the ingredients of every single thing I ate. Well, there is a new challenge I will be trying in 2019. It is called the “No Spend Challenge”. Another name for it is a Spending Fast. The main rule for this challenge is that you don’t spend any money on anything that is unnecessary. You can do it for a day, a week, a month, or even a year. I plan to do it for the month of January. The purpose of this challenge is to become aware of your spending habits. A lot of us don’t realize how much money we waste on things that we don’t really need. Any money I save by no buying things will go towards my credit card debt.

Everyone has a different idea of what is considered “essential” or “non-essential”. Here are the rules I plan to follow during my No Spend Challenge.

Essentials (can spend money on this)
Groceries
Bills
Gas
Toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste etc.)
Things for the baby

Non Essentials (can’t spend money on this during the No Spend Challenge)
Fast food
Books
Clothes
Take out/delivery/pizza
Going to the movies
Concerts
Soccer games
Jerseys
Races
Magazine subscriptions
Video subscriptions
Dvds
Beauty items such as nail polish, lotions/perfume

September 2017

A new month a new list of things to do this month! The biggest thing I’m doing this month is the 30 Day Vegan Challenge. I have given up meat and poultry for a month before, during Meatless March, but I’ve never given up dairy products or other animal products. This will be hard for me. Here’s a list of my goals and bucket list for this month!

1. Run 100 miles

I’m training for my first marathon next month so this is definitely possible. In August, I ran about 90 miles. This will be my last full month of training so I hope I can stick to the training plan as much as possible.

2. 30 Vegan Challenge

No meat, no poultry, no dairy products, no eggs, no seafood, etc. I’ve on!y been vegan for about four days and it’s been really hard for me. I’ve had headaches and have low energy. This is bad for me as a runner. I know I will need to improve the way I eat if I want to last the finish the 30 Day Vegan Challenge.

3. Continue learning German

I know some basic German, but I want to be able to read the German version of the Harry Potter books. One day I would love to visit Germany, it’s one of the top countries on my travel bucket list.

4. Learn to play guitar

My boyfriend said he will teach me to play guitar. I would love to be able to write some songs for him to sing while I accompany him on guitar.

5. Go on a spending fast

Anyone who knows me knows I have the bad habit of buying things I don’t need. This month I want to stop that. My plan is to not buy anything like books, running shoes, makeup, non essential things.

Spending Fast

Going into debt is as American as apple pie and baseball. Not all debt is created equal. When people hear the word “debt”, they immediately see it as a bad thing. This is not always the case. Many of us don’t have the money to pay for a car or a house or education at once. This is when it’s fine to borrow some money because it is for a good cause. Bad debt is when you use credit cards to buy youself the newest and latest things and then have no way to pay the money back.

Like many college students my age, I have multiple credit cards. I also have store credit cards for Target and Amazon. I am lucky enough not owe $15,000+ like many people my age do, but I want to make sure that it doesn’t happen to me. Although I have a minimum wage job, I have been pretty good about paying all my bills on time. I have never paid any bill late or had to turn off my phone or other “luxury” items because I coulnd’t afford to pay it that month. At the moment, my credit score is 700. Despite all of this, I know how easy it is to go into debt and owe credit card companies thousands of dollars.

I’ve read plenty of books about what to do to save more money and spend less. Also on how to not go into debt. There was even a movie that I watched, while it was exaggerated, it showed what could happen if I continue buying things I don’t need on my credit card.

My goal for October is to go on a spending fast. That means for 30 days, I will not buy anything online or in person that isn’t groceries or anything I absoultely need. Maybe I can even go two months on this spending fast. I want to see how much money I can save in these two months.
