2012 Football/Soccer Memories

2012 was a great year when it came to football/soccer! I went to two different states- Arizona and Oregon (Portland)- yes, just to watch a match! I also got to see my favorite club play in person (for the second time) Real Madrid and I got to see Tottenham Spurs. Oh, and LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup for the second year in a row 🙂

Arizona

In January, a week before my 21st birthday, I went with the Ameircan Outlaws to Arizona on a bus. For those who don’t know, the American Outlaws are the USMNT’s supporter group. Anywyas, the bus ride was about 12 hours, of course we stopped to get something to eat. I didn’t know anyone on the bus, but I ran into some people I knew when I was in Arizona. I also met a few people there, who I’ve kept in touch with via twitter. The match I went to watch was USA v Venezuela. The US ended up winning that match 1-0. That lone goal was scored in the 90th minute, well in stoppage time.

Portland

The next trip for me was to Portland, Oregon. Before making this trip, I really had no interest in ever visiting Portland. After all, the only thing I knew about Portland was the fact that they had a very popular donut shop called Voodoo Donuts. Once I was there, however, I think it’s safe to say I fell in love with the city!

Poor Iker!

When I first heard that Iker Casillas had been subbed out of a match due to injury, I was thinking, I hope it’s not serious! Then I found out that he’s out for 2-3 months! There goes Champions League! Which means that I will lose the bet I made with one of my coworkers. Oh well, it’s only $30. but Omg, poor Iker! =( We need him! Not only because he’s the best keeper in the world, but he’s our captain! Animo Iker!

My Reaction to Real Madrid’s Champions League SF Loss to Bayern Munich

I was cleaning up and I found this written in one of my many notebooks. I had written it minutes after finding out that Real Madrid lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League SF, in one of the worse ways- a penalty shootout.

April 25th, 2012

There are no words to describe what I’m feeling right now. We were so close! What happened to “Por La Decima”?!? How could we lose??? I mean, we won at home, but it went to penalties! I HATE penalties!!! My heart has broken into a million pieces! I’m crushed! I’m sure no one here would understand, but millions of Madridistas around the world are heartbroken and crying their eyes out! I got that out of my system, now I’m just in shock, somewhat numb. Well, at least Barcelona lost too. Silver lining. Iker is still the best keeper in the world, Cristiano is the best player in the world and Real Madrid is the best club in the world. Hala Madrid!!!!

As you can see, I was a little overdramatic haha but it was painful, I mean Madrid was so close! Well, maybe this season they will win La Decima

Losing Pirata

It’s been a few days since I found out that Esteban Granero, aka Pirata, was leaving Real Madrid to join Queens Park Rangers (QPR). Ngl, it still kind of hurts. Not as much as it did the first day though. The day before I found out he was leaving, I saw a QPR jersey, when I was on my way to class. I found it strange because after all, who watches QPR, let alone wears their jersey? At least in LA, I didn’t think anyone knew them. Later on, I realized that must have been a sign.

I didn’t find out about his transfer right away though. My phone had been off for aboout a week and I don’t have my laptop. In order to go on twitter, I had to go to the East LA library. Before going on twitter, I checked my email. That’s how I found out that Real Madrid had won the Super Copa against Barcelona the day before. I was so happy! Sure it was a meaningless trophy, but they beat Barcelona!!! lol So I went on twitter and I saw a tweet that said, oh Arbeloa’s tweet made me very sad. I was curious, so I went over to the twitter king’s profile to see his tweet. When I saw what it said i was like no way!!! I searched on twitter and sure enough, Granero to QPR was official.

I’m not the kind of person to show my emotions…like ever…unless I’m happy lol And i absolutely NEVER cry for anything else death of a very close family member. Well, there are 3 occasions where i have cried for football reasons. 1. When Mexico beat the US 4-2 in the 2011 Gold Cup final, I wasn’t sad though, just angry and frustrated. 2. When Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid in the penalty shootout of the Champions League semifinal and 3. when I found out Pirata was leaving Real Madrid.

Don’t get me wrong. I love that he will get way more playing time in QPR, but I will still miss seeing him in Madrid. Not only was he a great player, I loved his Madridismo.  I wish him good luck and hope he shows everyone why so many of us love him, not only as a player, but as a person.
