The End of My No Buy Clothes Year

One good thing that happened in 2020 for me was that I did really well in my “no buy clothes” year. I did buy some socks, underwear, and 1 bra, but those are necessities. The one item I did buy was a pair of shorts from Amazon for less than $15. I feel great about that, In know I saved a lot of money thanks to my challenge. I am considering doing this again in 2021 because I really feel like I can do even better next year. I only do this challenge for myself because I have so much clothes. I exclude my daughter from this challenge because she is still growing and needs clothes.

9 Months Into No New Clothes Challenge

We are now into September and I have really surprised myself at how well I am doing on this no new clothes challenge. The only clothes I am allowed to buy during this time is socks, underwear, and bras, all of which are necessities. Other than these items, I have bought myself only one item of clothing and that was a pair of running shorts that were around $11 and I needed them to run. I am not upset about that because it was a purchase that I made intentionally and I shopped around to get a good deal.

The biggest reason I have been able to do this is because I am part of a Buy Nothing group. A buy nothing group is a group in a local neighborhood where members give away items they no longer need, such as clothing, food, furniture, toys, etc. It is a way to help each other out, as well as prevent more trash from going to landfills. I have been given a lot of clothes from here, including pants for work, dresses, shirts, etc. I am so grateful for them and it has helped me save money on myself.

Since I have made it this far without spending much money on myself on new clothes, I believe that I can go the rest of the year without buying myself new clothes.

May Goals Recap

Here is my recap for the month of May. I think I did a good job overall with my goals. There were a couple that I completely failed, but did see improvement for most.

1. 10,000 steps daily

14/31

The only days I was able to reach 10,000 steps were the days I worked. Next month I plan to walk and run more so I can reach this goal

2. No Twitter

30/31 I only went on Twitter once and I honestly did not miss it.

3. No shopping at Walmart or Target

29/31 I didn’t do any shopping at Walmart, but I did shop twice at Target, mostly for things that were necessary.

4. Run 30 miles

This is a goal that I failed at. I didn’t run a single mile this month. Just had a hard time motivating myself, especially given everything that is going on. Also, I don’t like running in my neighborhood because it gets boring.

5. Watch TV only 2 times a week

3/4

The first three weeks went well. The last week of May I ended up watching tv/Youtube four days.

6. Use phone less than 6 hours a day

24/31

For the most part I was successful at this. I know I can improve on this next month.

7. Post 3 videos in YouTube

0/3

This didn’t happen. I didn’t post a single video. Partially because I just don’t feel like anyone will even watch what I post, so why bother.

8. Write 5 posts for my blog

5/5

I barely accomplished this one. Posted five posts for my blog. Hoping to post more next month because I have plenty posts saved in my drafts.

9. No fast food

29/31

I did well. I only ate fast food twice this month, but I want this number to be zero for the month of June.

10. Read 4 books

10/4

I ended up reading 10 books this month.

Update on “No New Clothes in 2020”

We are a little over 5 months in to 2020 and so far I am doing well with not buying myself any clothes. The only exception was a pack of socks that I needed for work. Last year I only spent around $80 on clothes for myself. I’m challenging myself to spend even less than that. It has been pretty easy so far. I feel like I have way too much clothes and I am currently in the process of getting rid of a lot of clothes. However, be a use of the current situation, I haven’t been able to donate it. It will be interesting to see if I can keep up the “no new clothes” challenge for the rest of 2020.
