Things I Don’t Buy as Frugal Mom Part 1

My daughter and I live in Southern california, LA County to be specific. This means we live near three theme parks: Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Disneyland Resort (this includes Disneyland and Disney California Adventure also known as DCA). We go to the theme parks pretty often and I’ve learn what is good to buy there and what to avoid.

Things I Don’t Buy at Theme Parks as a Frugal Mom

  1. Balloons- These can be pricey and I don’t want to be stuck holding them the whole day
  2. Bubble wands- Also pricey and I know my daughter will break it after one or two days.
  3. Popcorn Buckets- I don’t usually buy popcorn anyways and they are always coming out with new ones. If I bought every single one I liked, it would take up too much space in my home
  4. Drink bottles- Same as popcorn buckets. These can also be a bit pricey and I don’t want to collect things that will just gather dust in my home.
  5. Snacks like churros, popcorn, cotton candy aka things I can get most places

Things I Do Buy

  1. Snacks that I can only get at that specific theme park or their specialty items
  2. Pins- I don’t buy them every time, but every once in a while I do buy pins especially if there is something happening during my visit like the Boysenberry Festival at Knott’s Berry Farm or an anniversary at Disneyland
  3. Lunch- I usually like eating a big breakfast before getting to the theme park and then I can splurge on one meal which is lunch.

Which Theme Park Holiday Sandwich was the best?

Top one is from Disneyland, bottom left is from Knott’s Berry Farm, and bottom right is from Universal Studios.

This month I tried the holiday sandwiches from Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Universal Studios. The ones from Disneyland and Universal Studios were between $12.50-$13 and the one from Knott’s Berry Farm was $15.

Disneyland

I loved that the one from Disneyland had gravy on the side, so I could put some on each bite and the whole sandwich didn’t get soggy. I also like that it came with their homemade chips, those were pretty good. One complaint was the kind of bread they used. I think this was worth the price and I ate it all.

Universal Studios

This one didn’t have any cranberry, but the whole thing tasted amazing. I love the french bread they used for the sandwich. It was worth the price, I just wish they had included chips or fries with it.

Knott’s Berry Farm

This one was the most expensive one at $15. This one came with french fries. This was the biggest portion of all three sandwiches. My one complaint was that it had so much gravy that it made the bread very soggy. It would’ve been better if the gravy had been on the side like the one from Disneyland. I enjoyed this sandwich, but found the price too steep. Also, i couldn’t finish the whole thing as the portion was too much for me.

All three sandwiches were very good. However, my personal favorite was the one from Universal Studios. I would definitely get that one again.

Disneyland

A little over two months ago, I took my 5 year old sister to Disneyland. It was her first time going to Disneyland and we went to celebrate her 5th birthday. I had promised her last year that we would go and she was so anxious for the day to come!

She was so excited to go. She kept telling all her teachers and friends at school that she was going. I took the day off from work and my mom took care of my baby so that  my sister and I could spend the day together at Disneyland.

We were able to get on a few rides. The first ride we got on was It’s a Small World. My sister didn’t like that ride because she thought it was boring. Her favorite ride ended up being Thunder Mountain . We got on that ride twice and she wanted to keep getting on it but the line was long. We also got on the Roger Rabbit ride and Haunted mansion.

I took my sisters to meet a few princesses. She was happy! She got to meet Snow White, Ariel, and Elena of Avalon. We didn’t have to wait too long for this. She took pictures with all of them and was very happy when we left.

There were a few food items that we splurged on. For sure my favorite was the hot cheetos and nacho cheese funnel cake! We also got dole whip, which was pineapple and raspberry swirled together, frozen strawberry horchata, and my sister got a chocolate covered pineapple.

Here are some of the pictures we took.

Disneyland can be pricey, starting with the tickets. But here are a few things we did save money at Disneyland:

  1. Eat breakfast at home. I didn’t see any point in eating at Disneyland when we had food at home.
  2. Take snacks. We took hummus and pita chips, strawberries, carrots, jello, and yogurt.
  3. Say no to souvenirs. I offered to buy my sister one but she didn’t want any. Which is good, because pictures are enough for us to remember the fun time we had at Disneyland.
  4. Eat dinner outside of the park. I took my sister to Mcdonalds and spent less than $10 on food for both of us.
  5. I didn’t do this, but my mom took sandwiches with her. You can’t take them inside Disneyland, but my mom just left them in a cooler in her car with ice and when it was time for lunch, they left Disneyland to eat.

2015 in Review

2015 was a pretty good year for me. While I didn’t get to travel, I still got to enjoy the year with my family and my boyfriend.

My boyfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary in 2015.

One of my favorite memories of 2015 was finally going to Disneyland with my boyfriend.

As a season ticket holder for Knott’s Berry Farm, I was able to go a few times in 2015. My favorite was going to the Boysenberry Festival with my family.

My youngest sister was baptised and I was one of her godmothers, along with my other sister Destiny.

I finally got my driver’s license! Had to take some driving classes, which was almost $300, but it was worth it.
